In June '97 I got my picture taken with Frank Borman and Bill Anders, who were in Boise, Idaho for a special fly-over for an open house sponsored by the Idaho Air National Guard. I also have pictures of Agent 86 and Agent 99 and their "chief" while in the yards in '68 and more pix of the excitement of the 'TORA TORA TORA' filming and the practice for the Apollo 8 recovery. I am in constant contact AN Dorman Fry in Ft Worth TX and retired AOC George Wellington Morgan in the Seattle area. It is so neat to be in touch with fellow shipmates. Also, the weather in Bremerton ALWAYS rained!!, day in, day out. This is a great site for researching for old shipmates. As probably many of you know, the ship is tied up in Charleston, SC, at Patriots Point. The city did a nice job, making it into a Civic Ctr and a GREAT HAll of FAME!

The most vivid experience was sweltering in Manila Bay then three days later shoveling snow off the flight deck in Yokuska Japan. There were many interesting shipmates during my stint of duty.
My Name is John Hartwell;

I am a graduate student in graphic design atthe Portfolio Center (http://www.portfoliocenter.com) in Atlanta, GA. Iam currently working on a project that entails designing a logomark forthe U.S.S. Yorktown in it's capacity as a floating museum and memorial.

I have done a good bit of research into the Yorktown, and have found
your site and others to be of particular assistance in learning about
the Fighting Lady and her distinguished history. I even had the pleasure
of speaking with one of her original crewmembers, Mr. Joe Sharkey, whose
grandson maintains http://www.ussyorktown.com.

I'd like to ask about the coat of arms patch that appears onyour site. While he was not sure of what exactly I was referringto, Mr. Sharkey informed me that any patches or designs for the Yorktown came about after her time in the Pacific Theatre. Was the patch on yoursite created sometime after the second World War? If so, may I ask what is the significance of some of theimagery? In particular, I am curious about the arrangement of stars, both on the sheild and above it, as well as the meaning behind the striped diamond shape.

Any information you may be able to share would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time,
John Hartwell

In re the USS Yorktown~~
I am interested in learning more about crew members aboard the Yorktown between 1959 and 1962. I am specifically looking for a family friend who we met while living in Pearl Harbor during this time. I was taken aboard the Yorktown by a friend of my family. His Name was/is Glen Knudsen, CPO Electrician. My family Name is Blackwell. My father served 21 years on "Subs" between 1941 and 1963 when he retired. I was only 5 years old when CPO Knudsen took me aboard The Yorktown~~an experience like no other.
Please let me know if you have any information which might help me learn more about this person.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Suzanne Blackwell Alcala

Comments: I was part of the last ships company (radioman) on board USS Yorktown CVS-10, before she decommissioned. I was down at Patriots Point weekend before last and toured the Yorktown with my family. It was very enjoyable and brought back many memories. I was on board for the last North Atlantic Cruise of the Yorktown. I would like to know if anyone can tell me if copies of that Cruise book are available? I'm sure I ordered one on the cruise. I can't remember if I paid for it or not. Either way I never received it. I left the ship in Boston to go to "Radioman A School" at Bainbridge Maryland. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it. I would really like to have a copy of that cruise book.
Thanks,

I had the best hot refueling crew on the flight deck..Jonesie and Hindu! Many memories...The Pueblo capture, WestPac, Apollo 8, Tora,Tora,Tora movie(was a Jap Commander), around the Cape, North Sea (Arctic Circle), European cruise for a final bow. We worked so little on that cruise we had to bounce an SH3 to get enough landings for our flight deck pay. Became a Shellback, Mossback, and Bluenose on the Fighting Lady and sailed on both coasts...what a two year ride!

Comments=My father was aboard her during WWII. He was always in the underbelly of the TBF. Little is known about those times as he never spoke of that life. We know he was in TBF's as his log book still exists, along with pictures and other artifacts. He lay dieing of brain cancer, remembering little of family and friends. What he does remember and speak of, are his fallen comrades from that time. During a lucid period, he asked for his clothes, the fellows were telling to come on... they were all waiting for him. We asked, "what fellows"? He replied, "you know, the guys from the squadron". Then he lapsed back into sleep. There aren't many left.

Do you know where I can read more about VS-23 (Black Cats) Squadron, based in Los Alamitos or anything when the NAS Los Alamitos was active? I used to watch the planes fly over my house when I was young. My folks still live in Orange County and the base is now an Armed Forces Reserve Center. Sadly enough, I saw many bases close within the past few years. El Toro MCAS, Tustin MCAS (Helicopter), Norton AFB, March AFB and Alameda NAS all shut down within a 5 year period.
I served in the USAF for 8 years and was part of the relocation ceremonies of the 445 MAW from Norton AFB to March AFB. March's fate was simular to Los Alamitos, it now serves as a reserve center ad has been re-Named March ARB.
I have a web page dedicated to the S-2 Tracker.

Comments=My uncle was John Turbeville Battaile, on board the Yorktown (CV-12) from late 1943 until his death on May 9, 1945. He was with ship's company (I think) as an aeronautical engineer. On May 9, 1945 he and several others were on the flight deck and was killed by friendly fire.

The following is a WWII Diary excerpt belonging to a seaman by the Name of "Glavic" who served on the Yorktown. The Diary starts in October 8th, 1944 when the Yorktown left the states until October 19th, 1945 "May 9, 1945 Weather is better today and we sent air strikes to the beach. One of our planes piloted by Camcin (TBM), folded his wings and at the same time fired his weapons killing 1 man and injuring 19 others which 3 of these are pretty bad. One man who died was a Ensign, one Chief lost his left arm and the rest I do not know about. Besides all that has happened it is quiet today."

I am pretty sure this is an account of his death. I am inquiring whether anyone on board knew him or had heard of him and the incident that took his life. Anything anyone can add would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and God bless!

These four men were lost over Guam July 20, 1944 in the same aircraft.

Lt. Leonard E. Wood from Danville Indiana
Airman Radioman Edward Charles Donahue, from Alhambra, California
Gunner's mate Alfred P. Sabol from Philadelphia Penn
Photographer's Mate Owen L. Smith from San Diego, California

Photographers Mate Smith might still be alive today if he had not wanted to" hitch a ride to see the action". According to still living pilot's and a hospital corpman the aircraft was totaly destroyed by an explosion. The navy told the mother of Edward C Donahue that all were recovered in the 1950's from Guam's Jungle. Who to believe ? Me, I believe the eyewitnesses. Who am I, James J. Donohue (different last Name spelling, I don't know why, I was just a kid.) sole surviving relative, cousin to Edward C. Donahue. I have my local congressman working on solving this mistery with the navy. I would like help in finding any living relative's of the other's. All four after their death were awarded the Navy Cross and no on ever got it in their behalf. Submitted by Jim Donohue-boilermanjjd@cs.com

Comments:...Hello out there-again. I have already posted a notice in the log. My Grandpa, Chief Petty Officer Joseph R. Ulyan, served on the second Yorktown, probably from when it was commissioned to the end. He welded the planes up at night that the pilots flew in the day. He was a hard worker. Since my previous notice, I have visited Patriots Point. It was wonderful, but there was nothing there to commemorate the men who made those planes operational. Without welders and mechanics, no planes would have been able to fly, and I think you should put some emphasis on that.

Looking for "VAN THE MAGICMAN" (circa - 1944)

First let me say that your dedication page on the net to the men and women who served on the USS YORKTOWN is beautiful and wonderful to say the least.

My uncle Ensign Robert Clair VanNess USNR. (my mother's only brother), served on HER in 1944. He was attached to Fighter Squadron 3. Bob was on combat mission in the vicinity of the Philipine Islands on November 14,1944 when his plane was shot down while making a bombing and straffing attack against a Japanese convoy carrying fuel supplies. His plane was hit directly by anti-aircraft fire. The impact shattered the wing of his plane and it was seen to spin violently and crash into the sea. His squadron mates watched hopefully for some indication that Bob had escaped from the cockpit of his plane but there was none. His plane hit the water and sank immediately. His body was never found and because of this my mother was never able to put any kind of closure in her life for Bob.

On November 16,1998 my mother passed away. The day before my mother passed away I promised her I would do all I could to help keep Bob's memory alive. She wanted so much to be able to make one last trip to see The USS YORKTOWN but unfortunately she was too ill to travel.

Someday soon I hope to make the trip in her memory because I know in my heart it would make her happy. And Please I would appreciate any help from anyone out there who might have known my uncle Bob. This may be of some help. Bob's nickName was Van the Magic Man. He was a magician and preformed for the men of The Fighting Lady. Please if anyone has any information it would be deeply appreciated.
Christine A. Lindblom
Thank You.

I just now finished reading and enjoying your Yorktown website. It is a fine, fine site. I too have been working on my Yorktown memories website and hope I can get it aired soon.. I will let you know the address when available... One reason I am emailing you again, is that in your Memoriam Section...you have failed to mention two other pilots lost at sea in 1965 along with AX1 James I. Pratt, USN, HS-4. Their Names are as follows: Lt. Thomas D. Vincent, USN, HS-4 Lt. Charles K. Moran, USNR, HS-4 The 1964-64 Westpac cruise book was dedicated to these three airmen. Airman Pratt's daughter (now in Okinawa) had correspondence with me several months ago, seeking information on her father. Isn't this such a small small world in the computor land? ... Hello ,
I would like to point you to a new website for the Iron Woman Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to preserving the USS Cabot CVL-28. I invite you all to take a look and participate in our quest to save the Cabot. There is plenty of history and pictures about the Cabot and her sisters. More information regarding the foundation and status of the Cabot will be posted as we go along. The website is at http://www.geocities.com/usscabot/
I was also wondering if you could provide a link to our site as we are trying to publicize her story so we can save her for cvl and all navy veterans. Any help , ideas, or support is much appreciated.
Thank you,

Your Yorktown site is a credit to the crew that served aboard her. I would like to thank you for your site. I do have one suggestion, however. Your narrative of the Yorktown uses the term 'troops' to refer to the individuals who assaulted Tarawa, etc. 'Troops' is a term used to refer to U. S. Army personnel. I believe your site would be more accurate and respectful if the proper term of 'Marines' was used where appropriate. Thank you, and thank you for a great site.

Comments:...My Name is Brittany G., and I'm a thirteen year old student studying the Yorktown II (CV-10). I'm especially interested in the Yorktown because my grandfather, Chief Petty Officer Joseph R. Ulyan, served on her during World War II. I would appreciate hearing from any who knew or served with him. I would have liked to have heard his stories, but he died when I was three. Sincerely, Brittany G.

I was surfing the net and found the page about the Yorktown. I was in VS-23 and aboard the ship in the early '60's. I will look for some dates and Names that you may want to add to your site. I got out in 1967 so I just missed you. I got very sentimental on seeing that we lost people after I left. Thanks for putting the page together.

Comments:...My time on board the Fighting Lady was the highlight of my time in the Navy, truely a fine Lady. I was assigned to VSF-1 Det-10 aboard the Yorktown on her twilight cruise, operation peacekeeper in the North Atlantic. We flew the only jets on board, A4-C Skyhawks. I was a plane captain at the time, we had five aircraft on board. We ran interference on the Russian Bears when they flew over. Our squadron was berthed on the 02 level just aft of the forecastle and our line shack was across the corridor from the Flags quarters. His aide, a captain would drop over from time to time and shoot the breeze with us. He was really cool.
