I don't have someone to be listed but my father, Loyal W. Puckett, served aboard this fine ship & I object (as he would if he were still alive) to the 4 letter words used on this page. All involved deserve better.

My father, Edward B. Pierce, died on January 30, 1945, in the South Pacific while on board the Yorktown. He is survived by his widow, Gwendolyn, and two daughers, Dorinda and Carol Ann. He was buried on the island of Ullithie, an atoll in the Pacific, until the hostilities ceased, and in 1949, his body was brought to rest to the National Cemetary in Mobile, Alabama. He was 23 years old. I was 2 1/2 and my sister Carol Ann was 6 months old. If there are any sailors out there who might remember him, please contact me. My E-Mail is rholloway@zebra.net. I have a great deal of Yorktown memoribilia I would share with you. The only other sailor's Name I have is Henry Mickelson - Boonsville, Indiana.

I believe I have the original of this poster. It was made by Ensign Ziegler of Torpedo Three on our trip Feb 17,1945 to become the first carrier planes over Toyko. I also have the original picture made in January 1945 of the propeller contrails around an F6F that you show on the picture. It was later on the front page of the New York Times. It is an F6F of Fightin 3.
Listed below are our casualties from Torpedo Three
Fredrick A. Foss, Lt. USNR January 7, 1945
Arthur L. Parks, ARM1c USNR January 7, 1945 Spun off Bow – Take off Yorktown ran over plane.
Frank F. Frazier, Lt. USNR January 9, 1945
E. H. Weeks, AMM1c USN January 9, 1945
M. J. Dain, ADM1c USN January 9, 1945 Hit in right stub wing Down at sea off Sancho Point Chilung, Formosa POW - Day before peace in the Pacific was made. All Decapitated by Japanese August 14, 1945
Harold C. Skinner, Lt. USNR January 12, 1945
M. G. Skidmore, ARM1c USNR January 12, 1945
W. F. Garner, Jr. ARM 1c USNR January 12, 1945 Lost a wing at 2000 ft. Last seen spinning into cloud cover Over Saigon French Indo China Found plane with occupants in it when dredging Saigon River – 1947 - Bodies in seats – returned to US and buried in Military Cemetery St. Louis

Nice website. I was with HS 4, on the Yorktown, during the Westpac 64-65 cruise. HS-4 was, at that time, and still is known as the "Black Knights." You may want to correct this on your "Air Groups" page. Can you suggest any links that I might try, to contact the guys that were in HS 4--- at the same time as me.
Thanks, Rich. (former AT)vegaview@earthlink.net

From: "James Kohl"
I recently found a cast aluminum ashtray in the shape of a carrier (the ash area corresponds with the flight deck) and about 10.5" x 1.5" x 1.5" to the top of the island. It's marked USS YORKTOWN CVA-10 on the top opposite the island and has the initials FZ (I think) roughly etched in the island side. I found it very interesting and would appreciate any info you may have on it.

Subject: 5Th Division
Very nice site! Keep up the good work!
There seems to be an error in the description of the 5th division. The 5th division was responsible for the loading operations and maintenance of the guns. They were seldom responsible for aiming the guns. Fox division, Fire Controlmen, was always responsible for the aiming the guns whether manually or automatic. Also, the Gunnery Department consisted of the ship's first thru sixth division, Fox division and the Marine Detachment.

Was in VS 23, 1966,67,68, Made 1.7Wespacs Was the first aircraft at Kaui after the crash, The guy flying in # 4 seat was a young personelmen that had just check into the squadron and was up for a sit seeing ride. He lost his arm. I stayed on Kauai and investigated the accident.
Friends and I had a house up in Spring Valley some of the old squadron guys might remember. Called ourselves the Surfing Six. John Aske, Mike Connor, Bill Holden can't remember the rest.
I flew with LCDR Spraker,LTjg Leeburn, #4 seat Endinio, AT3 Was flying the night that NU13 went down. They went inside Chinese air space of an island called Hiannan. I believe it was a SAM that got them. Flew in the North Sea of Japan when the Koreans took the Pueblo. I think that we flew for 57 days straight. I know it was cold and now foul weather gear on the Yorktown.
Have a flight map of the tracks that we flew in the Gulf if you would like it for your site. You can'timagine the excitement and the flood of old memories when I hit this site.
Thank You for taking the time to set this up. I can't tell you how much it means to me just to look at it. Any old shipmates please get a hold of me.

A note about the Mystery Poster
Hi! I have just been searching for a more detailed biography of Tokyo Rose... Here comes an excerpt of what I am just translating for a local company here: P4615: Tokyo Rose (1916-) Tokyo Rose (1916-) Tokyo Rose's real Name was Iva Ikuko Toguri d'Aquino, an American of Japanese parentage. She was in Japan when war broke out and she began work for the Japanese Broadcast Corporation. She transmitted messages intended to lower the morale of Allied troops. The seductive tones of her voice earned her the nickName Tokyo Rose, coined by US troops in the Pacific. Her standard performance consisted of sexy chatter interspersed between popular tunes of the day. She would typically make a reference to a soldier's "girl back home drinking with some fellow who's rolling in money". In reality, her messages were more a cause for amusement than demoralization, and she became something of a favorite with the troops. After the war she was tried for treason and in 1948 she was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment and a $10,000 fine. The poster apparently reminds of this person.
Regards, Radek Vondracek.

Monday and Friday posts are date sensitive of anniversaries of major events or activities of the 12 active carriers. Articles are solicited for Wednesdays. These article need not be date sensitive.
